Facebook Marketplace accounts: how to start selling safely

Facebook Marketplace is a simple way to sell locally – furniture, electronics, clothes, vehicles – without building a website. But many new profiles find Marketplace missing, limited, or listings removed soon after posting. This guide explains why that happens and how to set up a Marketplace account that lasts.

Why some profiles cannot use Marketplace

Meta does not open Marketplace to every profile immediately. Brand-new profiles, profiles in unsupported countries, and profiles that recently broke Commerce Policies may not see it or may be unable to list. Meta's help pages also note that age requirements and account standing affect access. That is why sellers starting from a new profile often run into a wall.

What a Marketplace-ready account gives you

Our Marketplace profile is a phone verified Facebook profile with Marketplace access available at delivery. It removes the waiting step, but the account still has to follow Meta's Commerce Policies once you start listing. If you also want a page for your shop, consider a profile with a page; details in Facebook profiles vs pages.

Set the location correctly

Marketplace is local. Listings are shown to people near the location you choose, and your login location matters. If you sell in one city, log in from that area, and set the Marketplace location to it. For region-specific profiles such as Facebook UK or Facebook USA, keep using a connection in that country. Our proxy guide explains why consistency matters.

Secure before you sell

Buyers will message you, and scammers target Marketplace sellers too. Change the password, set your own email, and enable two-factor authentication before listing anything. See securing a new account.

Listing habits that avoid removals

Meta's Commerce Policies prohibit items such as weapons, drugs, animals, alcohol, medical products, digital-only goods and services in the items category, and misleading listings. Within those rules:

  • Use your own clear photos of the actual item.
  • Write an honest title and description with the real condition.
  • Set a real price; "$1" placeholder prices are often removed.
  • Do not post the same item repeatedly or in many locations.
  • Start with a few listings and add more gradually.
  • Reply to buyers in Messenger promptly; responsiveness is visible to buyers.

Stay safe with buyers

  • Meet in public places for local pick-up.
  • Be careful with buyers who ask you to move to another app, send codes, or click payment links. A common scam asks the seller for a verification code; never share codes.
  • For shipped items, use Facebook's checkout where available, or a payment method with buyer and seller protection.

If listings are removed

Read the notification: Meta usually names the policy. You can request a review if you believe it was a mistake. Repeated violations can remove Marketplace access, and that cannot be fixed by a seller after purchase. Our ban-avoidance guide covers general rules.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Marketplace not showing on my profile?

Marketplace may be unavailable for very new profiles, in some countries, for users under the minimum age, or for profiles that broke Commerce Policies. Check Meta's help centre for current requirements. A Marketplace-ready profile has access at delivery.

Can I sell digital products on Marketplace?

Meta's Commerce Policies restrict digital products, subscriptions and many services in the items section. Marketplace is meant for physical items. Check the current policy before listing to avoid removals.

How many items can I list at once?

Start with a few listings and add more gradually. Large numbers of listings from a new profile, especially duplicates, often get removed or flagged. Quality photos and accurate descriptions matter more than volume.

Summary

Marketplace access depends on account age, location and standing. A Marketplace-ready profile skips the waiting step; consistent location, good security and honest listings keep it working. See all Facebook options on the accounts page.
