Account recovery: set it up before you need it

Most people only think about recovery after an account is locked. By then it is often too late: the platform asks for a code sent to an email you never changed, or a phone number you never had. With purchased accounts this risk is higher, because the original recovery details belonged to someone else. This guide shows how to build a recovery plan for each account so a lock becomes an inconvenience instead of a loss.

The four recovery tools

Almost every platform relies on some mix of these:

  • Recovery email – where reset links and security alerts go.
  • Recovery phone – for SMS codes and identity checks.
  • Backup codes – one-time codes that work when your 2FA device is lost.
  • Trusted devices – devices that have logged in regularly; platforms often let them approve a login or recovery.

Set all four up where the platform allows. Our 2FA security guide covers the first setup steps.

Keep a recovery record

For each account, record in your password manager:

  • The login, password and 2FA secret.
  • The recovery email and its password.
  • Backup codes.
  • The date you bought it, the seller, and the order chat.
  • Which device and connection you normally use.

This record is what lets a teammate, or you in six months, restore access without guessing.

Gmail recovery

Google's account recovery asks questions such as the last password you remember and when you created the account, and it sends codes to the recovery email and phone. Logging in from a device Google already trusts improves your chances a lot. Keep using one device for each Gmail, and keep the recovery email current. See buying Gmail PVA accounts.

Facebook, Instagram and Threads recovery

Meta offers password reset by email or phone, login codes, and in some cases identity confirmation with a selfie video or ID. Instagram and Threads share recovery through Instagram. If you added your own email and 2FA app, most locks are solved with a reset link. Avoid changing name and photo right before a lock; profile consistency helps recovery reviews.

X recovery

X sends resets to the email or phone on the account. If 2FA is on and you lose the device, the backup code is the way back. Keep it safe.

TikTok recovery

TikTok resets by phone or email, and offers a support form for harder cases. Keeping the account on one phone with a steady connection reduces how often you need it.

If an account gets locked

  • Stay calm and do not attempt dozens of logins; repeated failures can extend a lock.
  • Try recovery from your usual device and connection.
  • Read the platform's message carefully: a "confirm it's you" check is different from a policy suspension.
  • If the account was locked before you ever logged in successfully, contact the seller within the replacement window. Our warranty guide explains what is covered.
  • If it was suspended for a rules violation after use, a seller cannot reverse that; only the platform's appeal process can.

Common causes of locks

Sudden location changes, shared proxies, many accounts on one device, rapid profile changes and spam-like activity are the usual culprits. Read common login errors and fixes and avoiding account bans for prevention.

Frequently asked questions

The recovery email on my account is not mine. What should I do?

Replace it with an email you control as soon as you have logged in successfully. Until you do, reset links and alerts go elsewhere. On Meta platforms use Accounts Centre, on Google use Google Account → Security, on X use Account information.

Can a seller recover an account for me?

A seller can help if the account never worked at delivery, within the replacement window. Once you have secured the account with your own details, only you and the platform can recover it. That is why your own recovery email, 2FA and backup codes matter.

How do I recover an account suspended for a rules violation?

Use the platform's official appeal process. Explain briefly and honestly, then wait for a response. Recovery tools such as reset links do not lift suspensions. Avoid creating a replacement account during the appeal, which can count as ban evasion.

Summary

Set your own recovery email and phone, enable 2FA, store backup codes, keep accounts on trusted devices and keep a written record for each one. Do it on day one and almost any lock can be undone. Browse accounts.
